Fruit and Vegetables of the month: January

January’s Harvest

January has come and with it, the New Year, and we wish that it also brings everyone health and happiness!

Because we all know that happiness frequently comes through the stomach, Horio went on a walk this month as well, so that it can select January’s fruits and vegetables, breathe in the bright yellow, fresh lemons and detect the mushrooms hidden in the forests.

Mushrooms, known as “amanitis” in Ancient Greek times. Many fear them, since they are frequently accompanied by myths surrounding poisonous properties – the 150 edible species of mushrooms found in Greece are rich in flavor, nutrients and some of them are extremely rare; Thus, mushrooms can be an ingredient that bring the menu of a restaurant – or one’s home cooking –  to another level.

Lemon. A flavor and scent always present in our lives and associated with good things. Lemons go with everything, adds taste to everything and has exceptional beneficial properties.
Our January basket will include celery, which has pharmaceutical properties (used by Greek, Roman and Chinese apothecaries), and the protagonist in our kitchen scenarios – food, salads, soups, even as a spice (using its seeds.)

Spinach, full of vitamins and iron, makes us unbeatable – that was the argument used by adults when as children they tried to get us to eat spinach rice: “eat up so that when you grow up you can be strong, like Popeye.” In food, pies, raw in salad, it give us, except for strength, lots of flavor.

So, let’s go to the grocers’ stands to find January’s fresh fruit and vegetables, whatever is found on the shelves and those that slowly are exiting the scene.
